The recently published book, (Rome and Izmir 2024), has 336 pages, with text and 650 colour photographs of Anatolian carpets of\"\"<\/a> the type preserved in Transylvania: Holbein, Ushak, Lotto, White-Ground Carpets, and a wealth of \u2018Transylvanian\u2019 rugs.<\/p>\n

The author gives particular emphasis to the origin and development of the patterns. In dating the single rugs, several aspects have been considered: carpets in paintings, information from historical records, such as old inventories and Ottoman registers, and inscribed rugs that have been correlated with stylistic elements. For most rugs, the dating accuracy is down to a quarter of a century.<\/p>\n

The publication is based on the study of all surviving examples, which include carpets found in parish or museum collections in Romania, as well as private and museum collections worldwide: from Turkey and the Levant, to Europe, and America. In many cases, such rugs were sourced in Transylvania.<\/p>\n

The book is richly illustrated with photographs of Transylvanian churches that display carpets, reproductions from European paintings depicting carpets, as well as Islamic and Ottoman miniatures.<\/p>\n

I just received an advance copy of Stefano Ionescu\u2019s new book The Transylvanian Heritage, Ottoman Carpets 1450 to 1700 \u2013 A New Perspective<\/em>. It is a triumph collating together all his intense full time research on this subject over the last 20 years\u2026 there is a deep understanding of this subject here found in no other publication on this subject so far. Ionescu’s book is a dictionary on the subject bringing together a vast body of material almost a complete catalogue on the subject (650 illustrations of carpets almost all in colour, plus numerous other illustrations of rugs depicted in western paintings). From this book one can appreciate the great variety of patterns and their rarity.<\/p>\n
